Padel vs Tennis, Pickleball & Squash: Which Racket Sport Suits You Best?

By Iván · 4 min read

Four racket sports, four different experiences. Some players love power and precision, others prefer quick reactions, clever tactics or endless rallies. So, which sport matches your playing style… and maybe even your personality?

Different rackets, different games… different personalities?

I’ve always found it interesting how people can fall in love with completely different racket sports.

Some enjoy the challenge of mastering the perfect shot. Others love fast exchanges, clever strategies or simply the excitement of a great rally.

As a padel coach, I obviously have my favourite (no surprises there!), but I think every racket sport has something special to offer.

Let’s see what makes them different and which one might suit you best. With a little personality analysis thrown in, just for fun!

Tennis: The classic perfectionist 🎾

There’s something beautiful about tennis: powerful serves, long baseline rallies and that perfect forehand down the line.

But it’s not always beginner-friendly. The larger court means more ground to cover, while timing, technique and precision take time to develop. As a beginner, you might spend more time collecting balls than actually rallying!

Once you get the hang of it, though, tennis offers an amazing combination of power, movement, strategy and technical variety.

It’s a sport that rewards patience and practice, and there’s always another shot to perfect.

Maybe you’re ambitious, patient, a bit of a perfectionist… and willing to work hard for that perfect shot.

Pickleball: The clever net player 😎

Pickleball is generally easier to pick up, thanks to its smaller court and accessible gameplay.

But there’s more to it than meets the eye. Much of the doubles action happens close to the net, where soft shots, quick volleys and clever placement often matter more than pure power.

It’s a game of patience, touch and knowing when to attack. You might start with a relaxed rally and suddenly find yourself in a lightning-fast volley exchange!

Compared with tennis, there’s generally less emphasis on powerful baseline rallies and more on controlling the pace and positioning.

Maybe you’re relaxed, tactical, sociable… but secretly very competitive at the net.

Squash: The non-stop warrior 🔥

If you love intensity, squash might be your sport.

You’re sharing an enclosed court with your opponent, reacting to balls coming off the walls and constantly fighting to control the centre.

It’s fast, physically demanding and surprisingly tactical. Good players use angles, length and placement to move their opponents around, not just hit harder.

Think of it as chess… but with a lot more sweating!

And once a long rally finishes, you might need a moment to remember how breathing works.

Maybe you’re energetic, determined, strategic… and slightly allergic to standing still.

Padel: The creative all-rounder 🎉

Now, here’s where things get interesting!

Padel brings together elements of tennis and pickleball, with a little of that wall-game magic you find in squash. But it creates an experience of its own.

You get baseline rallies, volleys, lobs, smashes and constant battles to gain the net. And then come the walls, which change everything.

A shot that would end the point in tennis might come back off the glass in padel, giving you another chance.

Suddenly, you’re defending, attacking, changing positions and trying to outsmart your opponents, sometimes several times in the same rally.

It’s relatively accessible for beginners, but as you improve, you discover a game full of technique, patience, tactics and clever decision-making.

And because it’s usually played in doubles, teamwork and communication add another dimension to the fun.

Long rallies, quick reactions, creative shots, constant transitions and plenty of unexpected moments. What’s not to love?

Maybe you’re sociable, adaptable, creative… and always up for one more game.

So, which racket sport wins?

The truth? There’s no single winner.

Tennis is fantastic for those who love technical challenges and powerful shots. Pickleball rewards patience, touch and smart positioning. Squash is perfect if you enjoy intensity, movement and tactical battles.

But for me, padel offers an incredible combination of technique, strategy, teamwork and fun.

The walls make every point unpredictable, the transitions between defence and attack keep things exciting, and playing doubles adds a special social element.

Maybe I’m biased. Actually, I definitely am!

But I think you should give padel a try before deciding. 😉
